Everything to ask before booking your wedding photographer.
A beautiful wedding lasts a day. Your photographs last much longer.
For Indian and South Asian weddings in the US, there can be multiple events, multiple venues, hundreds of guests, and traditions that happen only once.
Choosing your wedding photographer isn’t just about finding someone whose Instagram feed you love. It’s about understanding how they’ll work on the day, what you’ll receive afterwards, and whether their approach fits the way you want your wedding remembered.
We’ve put together the questions we recommend every couple ask before making that decision.

1. FIND YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY STYLE
If you’re planning a multi-day Indian or South Asian wedding, before comparing packages or prices, figure out what you actually want your wedding photographs to feel like.
Do you want:

☐ Editorial portraits that feel more intentional?
☐ A balance of candid moments and guided portraits?
☐ Bright, colourful imagery?
☐ Moody, cinematic photographs?
☐ Images that feel timeless rather than trend-driven?
Ask your photographer:
- “How would you describe your photography style?”
- “How much direction do you give couples?”
- “How do you approach candid moments?”
- “Will our gallery look consistent with the work on your website?”
- Look beyond the hero images.
Ask to see a complete wedding gallery—not just the photographer’s 15 favourite photographs.
2. ASK TO SEE A FULL WEDDING
This is one of the most important questions you can ask.
Almost every photographer will showcase their best work online. But a wedding gallery tells you much more.
Look for:
- Getting-ready moments
- Family interactions
- Ceremony
- Couple portraits
- Details
- Baraat or procession
- Reception
- Dance floor
- Low-light photographs
- Indoor photographs
- Large group photographs
- Unplanned moments
Ask:
“Can we see a complete gallery from a wedding similar to ours?”
If you’re having a multi-day or cultural wedding, ask to see a gallery that reflects the scale and type of celebration you’re planning.
3. WHO WILL ACTUALLY PHOTOGRAPH OUR WEDDING?
This matters more than many couples realise.
If you’re booking a studio or photography company, understand who you’ll actually have behind the camera.
Ask:
- “Will you personally photograph our wedding?”
- “Who will be the lead photographer?”
- “How many photographers will be there?”
- “Will we be able to speak with our photographer before the wedding?”
- “Will the same team photograph all of our events?”
If your wedding has multiple events, ask how the team will coordinate coverage across the celebrations.
4. HOW MANY HOURS OF COVERAGE DO WE NEED?
Don’t choose coverage based only on a number of hours.
Think about your actual wedding story.
Will you want photographs of:

5. HOW MANY PHOTOGRAPHS WILL WE RECEIVE?
More isn’t always better.
A thoughtfully edited gallery can be more meaningful than thousands of repetitive images.
Ask:
- “Approximately how many edited photographs will we receive?”
- “How do you select the final images?”
- “Are all delivered photographs professionally edited?”
- “Will we receive high-resolution files?”
- “Will we receive both colour and black-and-white photographs?”
6. WHAT IS THE EDITING & DELIVERY PROCESS?
Your photographer’s work doesn’t end when the wedding does.
Ask about:
- Editing style
- Colour grading
- Retouching
- Sneak peeks
- Delivery timeline
- Online gallery
- Downloading and storing your photographs
- Album design
Ask:
- “When will we receive our photographs?”
- “Do you provide sneak peeks?”
- “How are the photographs delivered?”
- “How long will our online gallery remain available?”
- “Can we order additional prints or albums later?”
7. WHAT ABOUT ALBUMS & PRINTS?
Your wedding photographs shouldn’t have to live forever on a hard drive.
If you’re considering an album, ask:
- “Is an album included?”
- “Who designs the album?”
- “Can we choose the photographs?”
- “How many pages are included?”
- “What paper and cover options are available?”
- “Can we order parent albums?”
8. DO WE NEED A SECOND PHOTOGRAPHER?
Depending on the size and structure of your wedding, a second photographer can make a significant difference.
A second photographer can help capture:
- Both sides of the getting-ready process
- Multiple locations simultaneously
- Guest reactions
- Different perspectives
- Large celebrations
- Cocktail hour while portraits are happening
Ask:
- “Would you recommend a second photographer for our wedding?”
- “How does your team divide coverage?”
Don’t automatically choose the largest team.
Choose the team that makes sense for your wedding.
9. HOW DO YOU HANDLE FAMILY & GROUP PHOTOGRAPHS?
Family photographs may not be the most glamorous part of your gallery.
They may also become some of the most important photographs you own.
Ask your photographer:
- “Do you help organise family portraits?”
- “How much time should we set aside?”
- “Can we provide a family shot list?”
Pro tip
Create your family photo list before the wedding day.
Keep it realistic.
A well-planned 20-minute family session is much better than trying to organise 40 combinations spontaneously.
10. WHAT HAPPENS IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG?
This isn’t the most exciting question.
It’s one of the most important.
Ask about:
- Backup equipment
- Backup photographers
- Data storage
- Image backups
- Illness/emergency plans
- Weather contingencies
- Contract cancellation policies
Ask:
“How do you protect our photographs from equipment failure or data loss?”
You want a photographer who has a system, not just good cameras.
11. WHAT EXACTLY IS INCLUDED IN THE PRICE?
Never compare photographers based solely on the headline price.
Two photographers charging different amounts may be offering completely different experiences.
Ask whether your package includes:

☐ Multiple events

☐ Second photographer

12. WHAT DOES YOUR CONTRACT COVER?
Before signing, understand the agreement.
Look for:
- Payment schedule
- Deposit
- Cancellation policy
- Rescheduling
- Overtime
- Travel
- Image delivery
- Copyright
- Usage rights
- Album terms
- Force majeure
Ask:
“Can we read the contract before paying the deposit?”
A professional photographer should be comfortable answering these questions clearly.
13. MOST IMPORTANTLY: DO WE CONNECT WITH THEM?
You’ll spend a significant part of your wedding day with your photographer.
So ask yourself:
- Do we feel comfortable around them?
- Do we trust their judgement?
- Do they listen to what we want?
- Do they make us feel like ourselves?
- Can we imagine having them around during the most emotional moments of our day?
Because beautiful photographs aren’t only about cameras.
They’re about trust.

Before booking your wedding photographer, make sure you can answer:
