How to plan your wedding morning so you have time for beautiful photos – without feeling rushed.
Your wedding day will move quickly. The easiest way to make sure you get those beautiful getting-ready photos, emotional moments and relaxed couple portraits is to build your photography timeline backwards from your ceremony.
Here’s a simple timeline to help you plan.
THE IDEAL WEDDING MORNING
4–5 HOURS BEFORE THE CEREMONY
Hair & Makeup Begins
Give yourself plenty of breathing room.
Your photographer doesn’t necessarily need to arrive when hair and makeup begins, but it’s helpful to have them there once you’re close to being ready.
Photography moments:
- Hair and makeup details
- Wedding dress & accessories
- Invitations, rings & heirlooms
- Bridesmaids getting ready
- Candid moments with family
- Final makeup touches
Tip: Keep your details (dress, shoes, rings, invitation, perfume, jewellery) together in one place so your photographer can photograph them quickly.
2–2.5 HOURS BEFORE THE CEREMONY
Getting Ready Photos
This is when the story really begins.
Leave enough time for your photographer to capture the final stages of getting ready without rushing through them.
Allow around 45–60 minutes for:
- Putting on your dress
- Jewellery & shoes
- Veil
- Bridesmaids helping you
- Parent/family reactions
- Final portraits before leaving
Don’t underestimate this part.
Some of the most emotional photographs happen before the ceremony even starts.
1.5–2 HOURS BEFORE THE CEREMONY
First Look
If you’re having a first look, this is a great time to do it.
A first look gives you a private moment together before the ceremony — and it can also help you get a large portion of your couple portraits done before your guests arrive.
Allow: 15–20 minutes
1–1.5 HOURS BEFORE THE CEREMONY
Couple + Wedding Party Portraits
Now that you’re both ready, take advantage of the time before the ceremony.
Couple portraits: 20–30 minutes
Wedding party: 15–20 minutes
Immediate family: 15–20 minutes
Your photographer can help organise everyone so you don’t spend your entire cocktail hour taking group photos.
30–45 MINUTES BEFORE THE CEREMONY
Get Into Position
This is your buffer.
Don’t schedule photos right up until the ceremony begins.
Use this time to:
- Touch up your makeup
- Freshen up
- Take a breath
- Have some water
- Get tucked away before guests arrive
A buffer is not wasted time. It’s what keeps your wedding day from feeling rushed.
SAMPLE TIMELINE
If your ceremony starts at 4:00 PM:
11:30 AM — Hair & makeup begins
1:45 PM — Photographer arrives / details + getting ready
2:30 PM — Getting-ready photos
3:00 PM — First look
3:20 PM — Couple portraits
3:45 PM — Wedding party / family photos
4:00 PM — Ceremony begins
